My Vital Traits for Being a Sports Journalist: Health
November 27, 2023Hi and welcome to Getting to the Grid. In this series, I am documenting and explaining the steps that I am taking to become a sports journalist. This will be broken down into different traits that I have seen in sports journalists who are at the pinnacle of the field. These traits include health, intelligence, versatility, creativity, the desire to travel, and networking.
To kick off the series, we have the importance of health in the field of sports journalism. At this point in history, we are all very aware of the responsibility that we have to ourselves to be healthy. This is even more important when becoming a sports journalist. I want to be a broadcaster, so I will be responsible for being at events for hours on end while remaining energetic and reporting. The kind of stamina needed for this career can not be achieved without maintaining one’s health.

When thinking about my health, I consider mainly exercise and my diet. I am in no way a licensed nutritionist, but all of these tips and products are things that I use to make myself feel at my best and healthiest. I think the most important thing is to know your body, and these are a great way to start.
Exercise as a Sports Journalist
I am a Pilates girl at my core, and I think it helps so much with my everyday health and stamina. I try to mix up Pilates with a day or two of cardio each week because I know that cardio is critical even if I don’t like it. My favorite purchase in the past couple of years has been the Blogilates Ultimate Starter Fit Kit. It is the complete package for starting Pilates at home. It comes with a yoga mat, resistance bands, a mat strap, and a small massage ball.

Diet of a Sports Journalist
I absolutely will never tell someone that they should never eat this, that, or the other thing. I just want to give very basic recommendations for what I would eat, most of the time, as a sports journalist. As we discussed, maintaining stamina and health is essential as a reporter. The best way to fuel this stamina is with a high-protein diet and lots of fruits and vegetables. However, it can be difficult to manage this diet when one is constantly on the go.
As a result, I love to meal prep because it helps take the pressure off cooking every single day. Usually, I will prepare each dinner the day of, but breakfast and lunch are often pre-made. My favorite thing to make, especially for breakfast or a snack, is protein balls. A healthy serving of oats combined with a lot of protein makes it a great addition to my diet.

Overall, it is vital for a sports journalist to remain healthy. Games and news do not stop just because someone is tired or sick. The best way to enhance your health is to analyze your exercise and diet and find out what makes you feel the absolute best.
