Getting to the Grid: The How to on Becoming an F1 Journalist
November 27, 2023Hello and welcome to Getting to the Grid. I will update this new series here and on my TikTok and Instagram pages each week. My most valuable goals in creating this account are documenting and sharing my progress with others. The world of motorsports has not been welcoming to women over the past hundred years but now is the time for that to change.
Women In Motorsports
Icons like Lissie MackIntosh, Natalie Pinkham, and Rachel Brooke represent the future of females in Formula One media. These remarkable women work to make their mark in an industry that has traditionally been dominated by men. Additionally, their presence is a testament to the progress toward gender equality in Formula One.
However, it is important to acknowledge that the journey for female journalists in Formula One has not been easy. Unlike other career paths, there is no defined pathway for entering into Formula One in this profession. Each individual has taken a unique route to get where they are today, overcoming various challenges along the way.
Some female commentators in Formula One started as drivers in a feeder series, using their firsthand experience to provide valuable insights and analysis. Others have pursued traditional education, investing years of study and internships to gain the necessary knowledge and skills. Then some happen upon the opportunity by chance. They find their passion for motorsports and carve out a niche for themselves in the industry serendipitously.
The road to success for females in Formula One media is still being paved, but the fact that these icons exist is a clear indication of progress. With each new generation, more opportunities open up, allowing talented women to shine in the world of motorsports journalism.
It is crucial to nurture and support young aspiring female journalists who have a passion for Formula One, providing them with the resources and mentorship needed to thrive in this competitive field. Therefore, by embracing diversity and inclusivity, Formula One can continue to evolve and create a more balanced and representative media landscape.

While the presence of these icons is a positive sign, it is essential to recognize there is still work needed. By fostering an environment that encourages and supports aspiring female journalists, Formula One can ensure a more equal and diverse future for all in its media industry. Throughout Getting to the Grid, I hope to demonstrate a method for becoming a Formula One journalist.
